Hofstra Law Mock Trial Team, Coached by Partner Gerard McCloskey, Wins Tiffany Cup at 2016 National Trial Competition

Team Named Number One Ranking Team in their Region in Prestigious National Competition Held in Dallas

A Hofstra Law School mock trial team coached by Gerard McCloskey, a partner at Collins Gann McCloskey & Barry and adjunct professor at Hofstra Law School, has recently returned from the Texas Young Lawyers National Trial Competition in Dallas – where they competed against the top 24 mock trial teams in the country in the competition’s National Finals. The team, which last month won the regional round, received the Tiffany Cup at this prestigious national competition – which recognizes and honors the number one ranking team in their region. The finals of the national competition were held in Dallas, Texas from March 30 – April 3.

The winning trial team was comprised of Hofstra Law students Helene Weiss, Lauren Reilly and Sean Brucker and was coached by CGM&B’s Gerard McCloskey (Hofstra Law ’08) along with Jared Rosenblatt, ’03, who is faculty advisor to the Hofstra Trial Advocacy Association (HTAA), in addition to Kaitlyn Flynn ’14 and volunteer Courtney Charles, under the supervision of Professor Barbara Barron ’84, director of student advocacy programs. A second trial team from Hofstra Law, which also was coached by McCloskey and Rosenblatt, reached the regional finals, as well. This is the second consecutive year that Hofstra Law team has won the regional round of this national competition.

Established in 1975, the National Trial Competition is the oldest and one of the largest trial competitions in the country, and is sponsored by the American College of Trial Lawyers and the Young Lawyers Section of the Texas Bar Association. More than 100 law schools and 1,000 students each year participate in the competition, which was created to encourage and strengthen students’ advocacy skills through quality competition and valuable interaction with members of the bench and bar.

Gerard is known for his work as a skilled litigator, and serves as a Special Professor of Law teaching trial advocacy at Hofstra Law. In 2012, he received the American Bar Association’s “Mock Trial Coach of the Year” award.

Congratulations to Gerard and all coaches/members of Hofstra’s mock trial team on this outstanding accomplishment and their ranking as the number one team in the region at this prestigious competition.
