Rick Collins featured in the Queens Chronicle: New law helps NYers to seal their records

A new law has been signed to give New Yorkers, including many in Queens, an opportunity to have their old criminal records sealed, gaining a critical second chance and fresh start on life.

The New York State Legislature passed the 2017-18 budget on April 9. When signed by the governor, it added a new, far-reaching provision to the Criminal Procedural Law.

The change will take effect in October. It will allow tens of thousands of New Yorkers to have their criminal convictions sealed, including for most misdemeanors and some felonies. Before the change, a criminal conviction in New York remained on a person’s record for life.
