Tens of thousands of New Yorkers are eligible to finally have their criminal records sealed — but only 349 of them have taken advantage of the law since going into effect in October 7, 2017. The Metro NY piece highlights how many people are still suffering the consequences from a crime (often a minor crime) they committed in New York state so long ago — and how this law (which many New Yorkers and those around the country still don’t know about) can truly help ex-offenders eliminate the stigma of life with a criminal conviction on their record, and give them the fresh start they need when it comes to seeking jobs, housing and higher education.
